New Brunswick/Nova Scotia Trip:

Recently my husband and I traveled via personal car, train, and rental car, and visited several areas of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We crossed into Canada on the Peace Bridge from New York, and had no particular issues with customs at that point. They did ask to see our passports. The customs area there was extremely busy, and we were only held up about 15 minutes. We also had our car insurance information (this is required if you do not want to pay for the rental car insurance), medication information including original prescription bottles, and proof of health insurance. (Canada has a national health plan that does not cover foreigners.) We were not asked to show any insurance information whatsover. However, other people may have had a different experience with this.

From Niagara Falls, ON, we took the train to Toronto, another train from there to Montreal, and yet another train to Bathurst, NB, where we had a rental car waiting for us. This was our first real trip by train, and we enjoyed it. We had reserved a sleeping compartment for the two of us, and were quite comfortable. We spent ten days in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and mainly hiked and visited parks and scenic areas. People in all parts of Canada that we visited were genuinely friendly and helpful, and we truly enjoyed the experience. The accomodations were excellent for the most part, as was the food.

We returned to Niagara Falls by train from Bathurst, and drove from Niagara Falls to Port Huron, MI. We chose Port Huron rather than Detroit for our return to the U.S. because we didn't want to deal with Detroit traffic. At this border (Port Huron) there were several miles of trucks backed up, waiting to enter the U.S. However, our wait in the car was only for a few minutes, and we were allowed to proceed after a brief interview by a customs employee. We were not asked for either our driver's licenses or passports at this point of entry.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to someone who might be thinking about a Canadian trip.

Kind Regards,
Carol Farber
